Spot Color Printing is the process of printing with specific & seperate ink colors based on the PANTONE industry standard of mixing specific colors (known as PMS colors) to achieve an exact color match of a singular hue. Each unique color is printed with numerous "dots" (known as dpi, or the number of dots per square inch) within specific line screen (known as lpi, or the number of lines per inch). If spot colors are printed next to/touching each other, they must be "trapped" (or very slightly overlapped) to prevent any background to be visible. Hairline registration (or the act of perfectly aligning multiple colors) is critical. The most common uses of spot printing are for reproducing line art and text.
